Stéphane Lamassé is an Associate Professor of Medieval History at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, where he has spent many years developing connections between history and computer science. A specialist in the sciences and commercial arithmetic of the late Middle Ages, he completed his PhD in 2007 on arithmetic treatises in French and Occitan.

Head of the PIREH programme and principal investigator of several projects in digital humanities and artificial intelligence applied to medieval manuscripts, his current research lies at the intersection of history, mathematics and computer science. His work focuses in particular on the detection of numbers and arithmetic diagrams in manuscripts, as well as on the analysis and modelling of medieval calculation algorithms.

His research on scholarly populations in Paris between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries, conducted as part of the Studium Parisiense project developed with Thierry Kouamé, has also led him to investigate the management of uncertainty in historical data.

He is also Director of the MIMO Master’s programme (“IT Professions and Project Management”) and, in 2025, created the “Digital Humanities” specialisation at Paris 1, including the “Data Science, History and Culture” programme.
