Sophie Wintgens
Dr. Sophie Wintgens is a scientific collaborator in the Department of Political Science and an affiliated researcher at the Centre for the Study of Political Life (CEVIPOL).
After defending her PhD thesis entitled “China’s Power-Building Strategy on the International Stage: The Case of Chinese Penetration in Latin America” (2014), she conducted a one-year postdoctoral research project at the Political Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean (OPALC) of the Centre for International Studies (CERI) at Sciences Po Paris.
As an F.R.S-FNRS Research Associate (2016–2019), she then studied China’s normative influence in Central America and its strategic implications through the cases of China–Costa Rica and China–Nicaragua relations.
More broadly, her field of expertise focuses on emerging powers (particularly China and its relations with Latin America, Africa, and Europe), multipolarity, and issues of global governance.
