Christian Paula
Christian Alexander Paula Aguirre, is an Ecuadorian legal professional with a robust educational background and extensive experience in human rights. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, focusing on "Transitional Justice and the rights of LGBTIQ+ people, a possibility to reverse state structures of violence due to prejudice in the cases of Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador". His academic journey includes a Master in Constitutional Law from Andean University Simon Bolivar (2020-2022) , where his thesis explored "The LGBTIQ+ collective victim and the right to transformative reparation in Ecuador's transitional justice, 2010-2022". He also holds a Master in Human Rights and Democratization for Latin America and the Caribbean from the National University of General de San Martin (2013-2014) , with a thesis on "LGBTI Identity: Individual and Family Context through the Legal Institutions of Ecuador and Argentina".
His educational foundation also includes a Specialist in Constitutional Law from Andean University Simon Bolivar (2012-2014), a Postgraduate Diploma in "Human Rights and Women: Theory and Practice" from the University of Chile (2012) , and a Licentiate in Juridical Sciences and Lawyer from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (2006-2011).
Christian's professional work in the law field has primarily focused on International Human Rights Law, Transitional Justice, Constitutional Law, Queer Studies, and Decolonial Studies. He has been a full-time professor at the Universidad Central del Ecuador since 2014 and a visiting or invited professor at various universities, teaching programs related to human rights, constitutional law, and gender and development. Christian is also actively involved in activism, being a founding member of the Pakta Foundation, an NGO for the legal defense of LGBTIQ+ people, and a member of the LGBTI Litigants Network of the Americas.
