Marie Wilmet
Marie Wilmet is a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Law and Criminology of the Université libre de Bruxelles, affiliated with the Centre for Research in Criminal Law (CRDP). She defended her PhD in June 2023 at the European University Institute; her dissertation focused on the contribution of procedural rights to gender justice in international criminal law. Through a socio-legal study of the participation of victims of forced marriage in Case 002 before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, her thesis analyzed the substantive, procedural, and institutional prerequisites necessary for the realization of gender justice before international and hybrid criminal courts.
Her research fields include international criminal law, international criminal procedure, gender justice, victims’ rights and their experience of criminal justice, as well as feminist approaches in socio-legal studies.
Marie Wilmet joined ULB in April 2024. She is conducting a two-year postdoctoral project under the supervision of Professor Damien Scalia. Funded by the FNRS, the research project “Universal Jurisdiction in Law, Action and Context” aims to analyze the rise of universal jurisdiction proceedings in Belgium, France, and Switzerland. Its objectives are to understand how this jurisdiction is implemented in practice, the challenges encountered in terms of substantive and procedural law, as well as the experiences of the actors involved.
