Magali Bugne

Magali Bugne is a Professor of Japanese Language and Culture at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), affiliated with the East Asian Studies Centre (EASt). A specialist in Noh theatre, her research focuses on its contemporary forms and their reinterpretations in intercultural and popular contexts.

After completing a PhD in Japanese Studies at the University of Strasbourg and a JSPS-CNRS postdoctoral fellowship at Waseda University, she was an affiliated researcher at the Nogami Research Institute (Hōsei University) and coordinated the research component of a project supported by the French Ministry of Culture on representations of femininity in Noh. She is currently leading a project funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (Kakenhi, Program C) on the interactions between contemporary Noh creations and Japanese popular culture.
