Emmanuelle Perez Tisserant

January 2027

Emmanuelle Perez Tisserant works on the Americas, particularly North America, from the eighteenth to the nineteenth centuries, from a transnational perspective. Her area of specialisation is the Pacific Coast, and California in particular. She is interested in the conquest and colonisation of North America by European empires and subsequently by the newly independent nation-states of the United States and Mexico. This includes territorial expansion, as well as processes such as land appropriation, the subjugation of Indigenous peoples, the practical organisation of colonisation, and the mobilisation of labour.

She is also interested in forms of politicisation and state-building in these territories, particularly following independence (1776 for the United States and 1821 for Mexico).
