Virginie Arantes
EASt Co-coordinator
Virginie Arantes, a political scientist with a Ph.D. from the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), currently serves as a postdoctoral researcher supported by the National Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS). Her previous research centered on China's environmental governance, resulting in the publication of her book, "China's Green Consensus" (2022), which offers insights into authoritarian environmentalism and civil society dynamics.
In addition to her book, Virginie has contributed to the academic community with several papers published in reputable journals like the Journal of Environmental Management, Journal of Contemporary China, and Journal of Social Entrepreneurship.
Building on her expertise, Virginie's current research investigates the influence of green nationalism on the construction of national identity, particularly within Southeast Asian geopolitics. By exploring regional nuances and shedding light on an understudied aspect of green nationalism outside of Europe, her work promises to enrich our understanding of societal transitions towards sustainability and governance dynamics in diverse contexts. Furthermore, her research extends beyond this focal point to encompass a wide array of topics within the realm of environmental politics, governance, and sustainability. With a holistic approach that integrates insights from political science, environmental studies, and area studies, Virginie explores the intricate interactions between state actors, civil society, and environmental movements. Through her analysis, she uncovers the complexities inherent in shaping policies and practices related to environmental conservation and sustainability within the broader context of geopolitics, nationalism, and cultural dynamics in Asia and beyond.
