Midis de STRIGES "Antigender politics in the Brazilian National Congress (2003-2022): actors, dynamics of action and recent developments"

by Gustavo Gomes da Costa Santos, MSH Visiting Professor, AGS

The election of Jair Bolsonaro for the presidency of Brazil in 2018 represented the main setback in the recent history of Brazilian democracy. His campaign relied heavily on racist, sexist, and homophobic remarks to mobilize religious and conservative sectors of Brazilian society. Once in power, Bolsonaro turned the “antigender perspective” into government priority, mobilizing different state departments to the moral crusade against of the so-called “gender ideology”. He also had the support of congressional representatives who presented bills denying rights to women and LGBTQI+ people. The paper aims to analyze recent developments of the antigender politics in the Brazilian National Congress by looking at legislative proposals, which clearly intend to abolish and/or reduce rights to LGBTQI+ people. It also analyzes the profiles of the representatives opposing LGBTQI+ rights to understanding their political and religious affiliations and their strategies to defend an antigender agenda in the legislative.
