Conférence "Pro-Life Movement and Catholic Activism in the Abortion Debate in Western Mexico"

with Ana Gabriela González Anaya, Université de Guadalajara
In Mexico, activities carried out by conservative groups attached to Catholic Church and involved in anti-abortion and anti-homosexual marriage movements called "Pro-Family", are actively shaping the way large sectors of society understand gender ideology and women’s rights. Seeking to explore the strategies, networks, and social representations (Moscovici, 1961) mobilized by these conservative groups, this paper analyses how leaders of a “Pro-life” local movement are organizing and putting in place marches, meetings, and reunions to disseminate anti-abortion discourses. Collected data was gathered in Los Altos, a rural region characterized by its Catholic identity and right-wing political governments. Our study shows the degrees of influence that the Church continues to have in this region, and how Church and State collaborate to promote specific political agendas.
