Streets in Vietnam defy Western notions of urban public space, as they are not just pathways for transit, but dynamic environments where social interactions continuously unfold. These interactions take place not only along street edges or sidewalks—areas often claimed by vendors or extending private spaces—but also in motion, as motorcyclists, drivers, and other street participants actively engage with and within the urban space while traversing it. By considering traffic as a social space, this presentation examines how movement itself becomes a form of social interaction, highlighting the complex and multifunctional nature of street life in Ho Chi Minh City. The research reveals how mobility and public space are deeply interconnected, challenging traditional urban spatial theories and offering new perspectives on the improvisational and affective social practices that shape the Vietnamese urban experience.
