In 1914, the death of the French explorer Henri Maitre at the hands of Bunong rebels put a long halt to the colonial pacification of the Indochinese “hinterland”, which straddled current-day Cambodia and Vietnam. While in 1943, the colonial authorities erected a monument in Cochinchina to their deceased countryman, since 1975 the socialist Vietnamese government has been celebrating Pa Trang Loeung, the Bunong instigator of the killing. We will turn to the Cambodian side of the highlands, to examine the recent installation of a discreet statue of Pa Trang Loeung that prompts us to consider not only national memory politics, but also the influence of the neighbouring country’s monuments, and of international indigenous rights advocacy.

Catherine Scheer est maîtresse de conférence en anthropologie à l'Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient, associée au Centre Asie du Sud-Est (CNRS/EHESS/INaLCO). Après un doctorat en anthropologie à l’EHESS, elle fut post-doctorante à l’Asia Research Institute, à la National University of Singapore, puis chargée d’enseignement à l’Institut d’Ethnologie de l’université de Heidelberg. Ses enquêtes ethnographiques impliquent les habitants bunongs des hautes terres du Cambodge et ses recherches portent sur l'intersection entre missions chrétiennes, entreprises de ‘développement’ et politiques autochtones parmi les populations des hautes terres de l’Asie du Sud-Est.
