Solidarity is often invoked in political and social discussions. It is particularly cherished, and would constitute a fundamental civic virtue. It plays a key role in maintaining nation states together and would be a cornerstone of public welfare system. In brief, it operates as a cement of modern citizenship. However, this value is also invoked transnationally, and would apply across borders. It is foundational to the process of European construction, and would also underpin the establishment of the UN system. It justifies why Western states engage in international aid, and would also explain transnational activism. Solidarity is a polysemic and contested notion. While it is often taken for granted in public debate, any attempt to study it academically raises numerous questions. What is its precise content of solidarity and how does it work? Who has to show his/her solidarity and with whom? What are the borders and the limits of solidarity? This workshop will address several of these questions through a discussion of transnational solidarity in global queer politics. When is this notion invoked and how?
