"Understanding Egypt’s political economy is essential for understanding the political dynamics around the 2011 revolution and the 2013 military coup. The first half of this presentation will provide a brief overview of Egypt’s political economy with a focus on the political position of its business elite. The second half would focus on this elite’s role in the media landscape by introducing a critical political economy of Egyptian press. This presentation particularly aims at critically analysing the hegemony of Egypt’s business elite and the private press they own. A hegemony that requires the exercise of power to maintain consent under changing conditions, like the 2011 revolution and the 2013 military coup. Towards the end of this presentation, the audience will be able to answer the question of ‘Why and how does Egypt’s business elite control the post-Mubarak press?’"
