The presentation examines the content of the China Muslim Journal (CMJ) to analyze the legitimating and negotiating narratives employed by the Islamic Association of China and its contributors to bolster support for religious policies and to entrench the privileged status of Hui Islam as China’s only “normal” and “safe” Islam and the otherization of Uyghurs by securitizing of Uyghur culture.
