International human rights bodies increasingly agree that the medical treatment of people born with intersex characteristics infringes bodily integrity. In this lecture Peter Hegarty examines the history of social science thinking about the gender binary norm and the importance of making that thinking explicit in social science that examines the bioethical questions raised by medical treatment of intersex bodies.
